THE SCREENCODE APPROACH
Why QR Code Generation Should Be Free
Your browser does the work. You keep the QR code. We think that is a good reason to make static QR generation free and unlimited.
ScreenCode blog / Why free matters
A QR code should not come with a monthly bill
You want to put a link on a flyer, share your contact details or help a visitor join your Wi-Fi. Turning that information into a small square should be the easy part.
At ScreenCode, we think basic QR code generation should be free. Not a trial. Not a limited batch of codes. Not an image that stops being useful when a subscription ends.
That is why our free QR code generator makes unlimited static QR codes, with no generation cap or ScreenCode scan limit. You can design and preview without signing in. A free account lets you save and download PNG or JPG without a watermark; SVG export is a Pro feature.
The generator is already running on your device
Once the generator has loaded, your browser turns the information you enter into the QR pattern and draws the image locally. It does not send each new pattern to a server and wait for an image to come back.
Change a web address, edit a contact name or adjust the design: your device does that generation work. PNG and JPG images are also rendered and downloaded in the browser.
Running a website still costs money. Hosting, development, maintenance and account services are real costs. But making one more static QR pattern does not require another paid server-side generation job. That keeps the extra cost of generation tiny and makes offering it free practical.
Local generation is also distinct from account features. Signing in, saving to an account or enabling optional cloud sync can involve our servers. “Generated locally” describes how we make the QR image.
The information belongs in the code
A static QR code carries the information you give it. For a website code, that is the destination URL. For a vCard contact QR code, it is the contact record itself. A compatible reader decodes that information from the pattern.
ScreenCode does not insert a managed redirect into these static codes. A scan does not need to visit a ScreenCode tracking link first, and we do not count down a scan allowance.
The code itself has no ScreenCode subscription or expiration date. A website it links to still needs to stay available, and an image still needs to be clear enough to scan. Printing a URL in a QR code cannot keep that website online.
Pay for an ongoing service when you need one
There is a difference between generating a static image and running a service behind it. A managed redirect can let someone change the destination after printing. Scan reporting, team administration and hosted content can also require ongoing infrastructure.
Those are separate services with a different job. ScreenCode’s static generator does not include managed redirects or hosted scan analytics. If you change the information embedded in a static QR code, you need to download and share a new image.
We do offer paid features, including SVG export. Our point is simpler: you should be able to create a useful static QR code and download it with a free account, without buying an ongoing redirect service.
Make something useful. Keep using it.
Create a code for your website, contact details, email, calendar event, Wi-Fi network or social profile. Use it on a business card, menu, flyer or email signature. Test the finished image on the phones people will actually use.
Want your contact code ready when you meet someone? ScreenCode also offers Apple Wallet and Google Wallet contact passes. A free account includes one editable pass for each platform.
Free generation is a deliberate product choice. Your browser already does the work of making the code. We would rather help you put it to use.
